My name is Elaine Powell. I am fondly referred to as "The Heritage Lady" because I teach a class that helps people to bring their family history to life. My love of family histories and scrapbooking has helped me to create a class that I teach and a book that I wrote entitled "The Family Heritage Album."

The book includes a step-by-step plan of action that will teach you how to create an album that will include your family photos, stories, memorabilia, and genealogy. You will learn how to preserve your original photos, what to include in your album, how to decorate your album, plus much more. If you have questions about the book or want to order a copy, email me at [email protected].

The class will help both the scrapbooker and the genealogist.

CLASSES I TEACH:

CREATING A FAMILY HERITAGE ALBUM

The Heritage Album class teaches the importance of creating a Family Heritage Album. You will be given a step-by-step plan of action that will teach you everything you need to know to create your own family heritage album. You will learn how to gather the stories, and where to find the photos of your family, past and present.

You will learn how to interview your family members, how to journal the family stories, and how to include genealogical charts in your album.

SOLVING THE MYSTERIES OF FAMILY PHOTOS

This class will teach you how to date a photo, and will help you to determine who is in your unidentified photos.

I will illustrate several different resources to show you how you can identify the photos in your collection. Handouts are provided to help you identify your photos at home.

PRESERVATION AND STORAGE OF YOUR DOCUMENTS

Another class I teach deals with your family documents. I will teach you the proper way to store your documents and family papers, letters, and memorabilia. You will learn how home conditions, humidity levels and temperature contributes to deterioration of paper. You will learn what types of storage products to use, and products that you can purchase to help you clean your old documents, and what to use to lower humidity levels, which is often a cause of mold growth on papers.

ORGANIZING YOUR GENEALOGY PAPERS & DOCUMENTS

You will learn how to organize the "stuff" you accumulate as you research - all your documents, letters, miscellaneous papers, books, magazines, and more. You will learn the safe way to store your documents and how you can find what you need quickly. You will learn about the basics of file storage, and we will cover the best office products to use to store your items. You will learn how to organize paper files as well as Internet files.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

I have been a family historian for approximately 25 years. I have been a professional scrapbook consultant for over eight years, and a scrapbooker for 35 years. I am currently the President of the Central Florida Genealogical Society.

PHOTO RESTORATION

I also restore photographs. No need to mail me your photos. Just scan them into your computer and send them to me as a .jpg email attachment and I will restore your old, scratched, or cracked photos so you can proudly display beautiful photos of your family. Contact me for more information and rates.

THE COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG FOUNDATION

A portion of the sales of my Heritage Album book is contributed to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Colonial Williamsburg is a living history museum located in Virginia. My 7th great grandfather worked as a Doorkeeper for the Virginia House of Burgesses in Williamsburg prior to the Revolutionary War. I am also a member of their Duke of Gloucester Society.
