The 1876 marriage for Samuel Hatfield to Sarah Shinabery appears to show W.A.Strom as Justice of the Peace and George and John Oberlin as witnesses. However, this segment from the 1889 Elba plat map shows a Wm. A. Krom and an A. [Allen] Oberlin in section 23 as neighbors to Sam's property in section 14 of Elba Township in Gratiot Co., Michigan. Based on this information, the transcribed name of "Strom" should actually be "Krom", in which case this might be a clue as to where the 1876 marriage ceremony was performed. This Allen Oberlin and his wife Mary Wulmoyer did have two sons named George and John and Wm A. Krom did serve as a Justice of the Peace for Elba Township in 1875-1876.

As a matter of fact, in 1875 we can see that W.A.Krom IS the Justice of the Peace for Elba Township of Gratiot County, Michigan. Another interesting thing is that in 1870 we can see that both Hason Sinclair and William Krom are serving on the township board. In 1880 Hason Sinclair becomes the father-in-law to Sam's brother, John Hatfield, when John marries Hason's daughter, Mertie Sinclair.
