To my knowledge, there is not a living, breathing Hatfield genealogist
who has copies of all the original documents on which the Matthias
Hatfield family is constructed, but much of this can actually be found by
today's researchers, thanks to a pretty decent book from which the
information on his line comes. I do have a copy, and our own Bill
Whitlock has gone to the trouble of entering this book into his genealogy
software and has entered newer research on the line of Matthias as well.
Since he won't trumpet his own horn, I'll do it for him. Bill has
uploaded his mighty Matthias Hatfield file to WorldConnect. You can
access it at this URL:
http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2911

Here's the citation to the book:
THE DESCENDANTS OF MATTHIAS HATFIELD. By Abraham Hatfield (also listed as
compiler of THE HATFIELDS OF WESTCHESTER and CAPTAIN JOHN HATFIELD,
LOYALIST). 1954. Pub. by the New York Genealogical and Biographical
Society. Family History Library 929.273 H286a (and in many other
libraries as well)
Unlike many other published Hatfield genealogies, this book actually
refers to records and quotes some of them. This is very much a good
thing, for any genealogist who claims a lineage must base it on something
other than wishful thinking.
Don't bother to believe a book that doesn't tell you about its sources
... and I do mean with some specificity on each ancestor covered.
At the bottom of this message, I will transcribe the book's entry on
Abraham Hatfield/Margaret Winans so that you can see what a published
genealogy based on records might look like. This includes the wills of
both Abraham Hatfield and his wife Margaret Winans.
There is NO MENTION of the line of Virginia's George Hatfield, Joseph
Hatfield, or Mansfield Hatfield in this book, or therefore in Bill's
online database.
Within a couple of weeks, we will finally know if the Virginia Hatfields
might be related, no matter how distantly, to Matthias Hatfield ... for
DNA will tell us if there's a match or not.
At least we'll know for the participants who are in our DNA project's
Hatfield Lineage 1. We won't know for Mansfield Hatfield, for no one from
his line has stepped forward to be tested.

"Among the most active on the American side was Captain Baker Hendricks,
a cousin of the noted John Smith Hatfield, on the other side. Washington
had employed him at an early period as a spy, in which capacity he had
been allowed to trade with the enemy on Staten Island. Governor
Livingston commissioned him, September 19, 1780, to fit out two whale
boats, the "Flying Squirrel" and the Charming Betsey," as privateers to
prey on the enemy's vessels. He was at this time about 24 years of age.
"From the "New Jersey Gazette' of May 9, 1781:
"On Saturday, the 21st ult. a party of about seventy of the enemy came
over to Elizabeth Town from Staten Island. They landed at Halstead's
Point and were discovered between that place and the town by Captain
Hendricks, who was patroling with about ten or twelve men and though so
much inferior in number he kept up a smart fire on them which prevented
them from penetrating farther into town than Doctor Winans. After
collecting a few horses etc. and firing through windows in the room where
Mrs. Winans was sitting, wounding a boy in the arm, they burned the house
of Mr. Ephraim Marsh and went off to their boats.
"A New York paper says that the party was a detatchment of General
Skinner's Corps, under his commnand accompanied, as usual, by Captain
Cornelius Hatfield with some of his Refugees as guides.
"Captain McMichael of the Refugee Post as Bergen Point has been taken out
of a flag (boat) by the rebels and is held in irons. We have only to
regret the loss of Mr. Elias Mann, who has ever distinguished himself on
all occasions' as a brave and active Loyalist. He was killed by a shot
from a skulking party as the troops were reembarking, Captain Hatifeld
and one private were slightly wounded.
