Jerry,
I attempted to send the following to your old address. Sorry for the
delay.
Also sent to Elaine Powell.
****
Dear Jerry and Elaine,
I am descended from Thomas Hatfield and Anna Hamden of Leiden through
their
grandson, Pieter (bap. RDC of NA 1683). My lineage from Pieter can be
trace
in the Abraham Hatfield book (ref. #1 below) down to David on p.65. Two
cousins and I have verified several of these steps but not all, though
we're
working on it. I have connected David to Peter H. Hatfield by strong
circumstantial evidence - no primary sources so far. I sent my descent
from
Peter H. to Jerry Hatfield in 1997.
I recently visited your web pages and felt it was appropriate to pass
along
some Hatfield data I have encountered which you may or may not have
found.
Elaine's page says:
"The first identifiable ancestor of the American branch was Thomas
Hatfield,
born 4 MAR 1620 in Almondbury, Yorkshire, England. He was a religious
dissenter and to escape persecution fled to Leyden, Holland, with the Dr.
John Robinson (Robertson) congregation. He married Anne Hemptem or
HAMPTON
Cox, born 14 MAR 1612 in Englefield, Berkshire, England. She was the
widow of
Valentine Oocxs (Cox) and they were married in about 1635 . "
I believe the dates given are incorrect because: The Leyden Archives
Bethrothalbook (ref. 2) records the banns for and marriage of Thomas
Hadvelt
(Hatfield) with Anna Hentem (Hamden), widow of Valentine Oocxs (Cox).
The
book contains photocopies of the original, handwritten, dated documents
(with
English translations) that might be considered primary records. Banns
were
read on April 17, April 24, and May 1, 1621, and the marriage took place
on
May 1, 1621. Thomas could not have been born in 1620, travelled to
Holland,
and married in 1621 (though I'm sure many of our Hatfield genes are
precocial!). Similarly, it is unlikely that Anna was born in 1612 and
married in 1621.
The Leiden Archives web site (ref. 3) provides more information (in Dutch
&
English) on the Hatfields in Leiden If you play around a little, you can
get
to records that mention Thomas Hatfield in Dec. 1626 "ca. 30" and Dec.
1632
"ca. 36"; and "Anne Hamden, ca. 30, wife of Thomas Hatfield, Leyden" in
Sep.
1630. The context strongly suggests that the numbers given are their
ages at
that time. I'm not sure what the ca. means. At first I thought it was
circa
but I'm no longer sure of that. Anyway, if those numbers are ages, they
would suggest that Thomas was born in 1596, though I wouldn't rule out
1600,
and that Anna was born 1599/1600.
If I understand correctly, the group of English dissenters who went to
Holland around 1610, some of whom became the "Pilgrim Fathers", were from
Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire (ref. 4). So our Thomas
could
have been born in Yorks. in 1600 (ref. 5). However, there was a Thomas
Hatfeeld baptized in Spridlington, Lincs. in 1597 (ref. 6). Could he be
ours?? And, there are others in the IGI, e.g., in 1588/89 bap. at
Sheffield, Yorks. and in 1607 bap. at Coleby, Lincs.
I'm not sure where the ORIGINAL information, that Thomas was born 1600 in
Yorkshire and moved to Holland in 1610, came from. Could it be
speculation
that has been passed around and assumed to be fact? That happens all too
often! Do you know the original sources? Unless he accompanied
relatives or
some other family, it would seem that one or both of his parents, if
alive,
went too, but I know of no one who claims that. A Thomas born in 1589
could
have gone on his own.
An IGI search of the British Isles in that era for Anna
Hampton/Hentem/etc.
yields too many hits to speculate on her birth and origin.
I'm interested in your opinions of the data I have presented above. Are
my
references convincing enough to lend some credence to my arguments? Any
counter arguments and suggestions you might have for pinning down our
Thomas
Hatfield would be welcomed.
I believe both of you are descended from Matthias Hatfield. Have you
read
the article that Abraham Hatfield wrote after the publication of his book
(ref. 7)? In it he claims that Matthias was actually from Danzig and
that
his surname was most likely a German one such as Huttfeld, etc. He
claims to
have found a Mathias Hutfelt in Danzig in 1620 indicating that the name
Matthias was used in at least one German family with a name similar to
Hatfield. If what he says is true, Matthias was probably not the son of
Thomas (md. 1621).

Bernard Hatfield was born circa 1563 in Sheffield, York and married
Katherine Woodhouse on 3 Nov 1588 at the Cathedral St. Peter in
Sheffield.
Their son, Thomas Hatfield, was born on 23 September 1589 in Sheffield. I
believe that he was the Thomas Hatfield who emigrated to Holland circa
1610, where he married Anne Hampton in 1621. Their son, Matthias Hatfield,
was born in the 1620s or 1630s; his future wife, Maria Melyn, was born in
1637, so I assume that Matthias was born closer to that date. The source
for a lot of the above information is www.familysearch.org. The following
is my line, as it stands at this time.
Bernard Hatfield (1563-?) = Katherine Woodhouse
Thomas Hatfield (1589-?) = Anne Hampton
Matthias Hatfield (ca 1633-1687?) = Maria Melyn
Abraham Hatfield (1670-1706) = Phoebe Ogden
Abraham Hatfield II (1695-1745) = Margaret Winans
Jacob Hatfield (1730-1774) = Mary Lyon
Abraham Marsh Hatfield (1767-1851) = Constantine Jones
Jacob Hatfield (1799-1884) = Margaret Kelley
Abram Marsh Hatfield (1829-1914) = Louisa Pinkney and Margaret Reid Short
Clifford Kaye Hatfield (1883-1971) = Olive Fleming Tolman
Olive Kaye Hatfield (1928-) = Raymond Grant Parsons
Cynthia Margaret Parsons (1950-) = Alan Arthur Lear

The wife of Abraham Hatfield (b. 1695) is given in NYGBR 68:134/224, as
Phoebe Ogden, not Phebe Marsh.
Here is what I show for Abraham's ancestry:
1. Abraham Hatfield Jr. b. 1695, Elizabethtown, NJ, m. 1716, in New
Jersey,
Margaret Winans, b. 1699, Elizabethtown, NJ, d. Elizabethtown, NJ. Abraham
died Elizabethtown, NJ.

m.
25 Aug 1664, in New Haven, CT, Maria Mariken (Paradys) Melyn, b. Nieuwe
Kerk, Amsterdam. Matthias died Elizabeth, NJ, buried: St. Johns Church,
Elizabeth, NJ. There have been many statements as to the nationality of
Matthias Hatfield. Earlier accounts usually stated that he came from
England. It is now known from an entry in the private journal of Dr. John
Winthrop, Jr. (in the Massachusetts Historical Society) that he was a
German, from Danzig. Matthias Hatfield was in New Haven as early as 1 May
1660, when he took the Oath of Fidelity there. He moved to Elizabeth Town,
New Jersey, about 1665 or 1666, with a number of other residents of New
Haven, and was one of the Associates, or founders of Elizabeth Town. His
name appears on the oath of allegiance, but the exact date of taking the
oath is not known, the records merely stating that it was begun 19
February
1665/6. He was a weaver and a boatman, a man of considerable means. His
will, dated 19 April 1684 and proved 13 December 1687, mentions "wife and
children" but does not name them. His widow was living in 1694, when her
name appears on the Parish List of the Independent Minister, but she
probably died before 1699.

8. Thomas Hatfield m. 01 May 1621, in Leyden, Holland, Ann Housten. Thomas
died England.
From: Edward J. Harrison Date: Thursday,

Thomas HATFIELD was born in England but migrated to Leyden, Holland
where he was married in 1621. Two of his sons moved to New Amsterdam
sometime prior to 1664. One son, Thomas Hatfield born about 1627 probably
in Leyden, was a soldier in the Dutch army. He married Alice EBEL in 1671
and settled in Westchester County NY. The other son, Matthias Hatfield
born
1622-1630 in Leyden, married Maria MELYN at New Haven in 1664 and moved to
Elizabethtown NJ.
9. Ann Housten.
10. Cornelis MELYN b. 1600, Belgium, m. 22 Apr 1627, in Amsterdam,
Holland,
Jannetje ADRYIAENS, b. circa 1604. Cornelis died 1674. Corneille Melyn,
son of Andre Melyn and Marie Ghuedinx-Botens, was baptized in the Church
of
Saint Walburga, 17 September 1600. [Bapt. No. 83]. This child, who was
destined in his later years to become such a prominent man in the new
world,
will through this sketch be referred to as Cornelis Melyn, that beingthe
accepted Flemish spelling of his given name, and the form in which he
always
wrote it.
Cornelis Melyn was born in Antwerp, in the house called "The Sack"
where his parents then lived. This house was situated in the Rue du Sac
[Fl.ZakStraat] in or near the Bourg, or castle, of which a short
description
will be given later. . . .In October, 1606, Cornelis lost his mother,
Marie
Ghuedinx-Botens, and very soon thereafter on 9 November, 1606 he had the
further misfortune to lose his father. Thus at the age of six years, (his
age as given in the inventory of his father's estate) he found himself
bereaved of both father and mother.
In NYGBR 68:3-4, there is translation of his marriage certificate,
dated 22 April 1627, which refers to him as "aged 25 years". Burton
comments: "It will be noted that the age is given as "25 years", whereas
on
the basis of his baptismal date of 17 September 1600, he was at least 26
years and 7 months old at the time of the issuance of this certificate. It
is quite probably tht, since 25 years was according the Dutch law the age
at
which a man attained his full majority, the clerk was merely indicating
that
Melyn was of legal age to marry without the consent of his guardians. That
Melyn knew his correct age is evident from a declaration signed by him 29
June 1644, in which he gives his age as 44 years."

Staten Island and Some of his Descendants".

The series of Articles in NYGBR are by Paul Gibson Burton and discuss
both the Ancestry and Descendants of Cornelis Melyn. These are reprinted
in
a volume called THE WINANS FAMILY, Ancestors and Descendants of Clarence
Hatfield Winans 1854-1942 of Linden, New Jersey, by Melda B. Haynes
Shippey,
Madison, N.J., Certified Genealogist, a copy of which may be found in
Special Collections, Rutgers University Library, New Brunswick, NJ CS 71
.W56 1990. That book contains excellent sections on the Hatfield as well
as
Winans and Melyn families, and also has Bibliography to allied families.
11. Jannetje ADRYIAENS b. circa 1604. Her name has also been rendered
Jannetje (Jannetie) Van Myert, perhaps using her geographical location.
Their marriage certificate, translated and set forth in NYGBR 68:3, as
follows:
"Appeared as before Cornelis Melyn from Antwerp, aged 25 years, having
no parents, leather dresser, living in the Elant Street, assisted by
Geraert
Lodewijsz [and] Jannetie Arienss from Myert, aged 23 years, having no
parents, living on the Lindegracht, assisted by Engel Thomas." -- after
certifications, it was signed Cornelis Melijn and Jannitken Adryiaens. It
was dated 22nd of April 1627.

Saint Andrew, Antwerp, to Jeanne Van Westvoort, the daughter of Eustache
van
Westvoort and Jeanne van Callen. His first wife being deceased a little
after October, 1596, probably in childbirth, Andre Melyn married his
second
wife, Marie Ghuedinx Alias Botens. This marriage was celebrated in the
Parish of Saint Walburga in November, 1597. The exact date is not given in
the marriage entry.
21. Marie GHUEDINX-BOTENS d. Oct 1606, Belgium. NYGBR 67:246 (1936) "The

referred to in the baptismal records as "Marie Ghuedinx" and at other time
as "Marie Botens" but both refer to the same person, whose name is
"Ghuedinx
