Alice Hatfield, 1860
--------------------------------
Lynn Hawkins I spent some time last night checking out Alexander and I'm
confident we can rule him out. From what I did find, he was born most
probably in 1827, but possibly as late as 1830 (a couple records were off
a year or so). In the 1850 Census, he is living where he works - a
sawmill - and the census states his trade (though I can't make out what
it is) and he is listed with the other workers at the mill. He IS on the
same census as Wall and that's probably where the confusion comes in, but
Alexander is on page 1 and Wall is on page 52 so they aren't living very
close. Then, if you look at Wall's 1830 and 1840 census, there is no male
of the correct age for Alexander no matter whether you use 1827 or 1830
as the birth year. Fortunately, there are hardly any Alexander Hatfields.
I only found two, and the other's age and place of birth, etc is way off
from the Alexander we are looking for. More research and I believe I
found him. He disappears after the 1850 census (I believed there should
be an 1860 for him, but couldn't find one I was confident in at this
point) then never shows up again. Any time that happens, I start looking
for military records to see if they died in the civil war. Sure enough, I
found an Alexander Hatfield, born 1827-1828 (they state his age in years,
not birthdate) who enlisted Dec 31, 1861 in Capt Stuart's Co, Company
"I", 13th Regiment Kentucky Infantry. Per Fold3 records, he was in the
hospital for a couple months, back to his regiment a couple months,
disappeared a couple months, back again, then died of pneumonia in
Evansville, Indiana on June 18, 1862. Apparently, because he was
classified as desserted when missing (was probably sick) they did not
give him an honarable discharge. It was challenged many years later, but
denied. So, he was not buried in a national cemetery either and I can't
find where he was buried. It appears he was married to a Diana Sheff,
daughter of Andrew Sheff, on Mar 15, 1857 before enlisting, and the
marriage index says that his father is Thos Hatfield and mother is A B
Hatfield. With this information, I was able to find an 1860 census for
him showing him, Diana, and baby Alice age 2. Confirming this is the same
Alexander as Fold3, is that Diana then marries John B Reece, son of
Joseph and Mary Reece on May 14, 1867 - after Alexander dies. So, I
believe this Alexander belongs to Thomas & A B Hatfield. I have NO Thomas
Hatfields that are of the correct age to be Alexander's father. So, if
anyone does have one in their tree, can you let me know so I can put
Alexander in the correct line now that I have him identified? Thanks!
