In the 1820 Census of Russell County VA, there were three females under
ten years old, presumably Nancy, Phoebe, and Sarah; and 1 female between
the ages of 16 and 25, Elizabeth. In the Logan County Census for 1830,
she has added Richard and Mary, both under 9 years old; and the 3 girls
above are enumerated. (By 1830, Nancy was married to Ephraim Hatfield and
moved out.). Jim Vance was born around 1832.

Barbara Vance Cherep: Janice and I spent some time on this very question.
Since DNA, given by Terry Vance he was able to prove he is a Ferrell,
some of the daughters, Nancy we discussed above, Sarah who marred Azander
Taylor their bond was signed by A. (Andrew) Ferrell once again, and
Elizabeth Vance, married Dec 30, 1836, Pike Co. Never found a marriage
for Richard, Jim or Phoebe. However, RIchard married Mary Staten on Apr,
, 1839, Logan. This was a bible record. But this makes perfect since
knowing how the land deeds went.

I believe that they lived neighbors because he was technically married.
She was never far from him, she recorded her land in 1834, however, her
daughters married in Pike as early as 1828. When he moved across the Tug
from KY, she did as well. And the land was sold to her from John and his
wife. The only move that she made without him was in 1858 when Elizabeth
and RIchard Vance sold their land on the Tug and moved to McDowell for a
few years, by 1860 they were again back in Pike. Elizabeth disappears
soon after. What I find funny is that in the 1822 deed for John it
mentions a "clift" in the description, I think it may be the same "clift"
in her deed from James Juctice. But I would have to see how that land was
sold and split to totally understand what happened. Until I can get all
those deeds, its mute and only a theory. Seems that Jim was pretty much
born into the Timber business being John Ferrell owned a Mill on the Tug.
