John D. Hatfield moved to the US from England when he was a 'young man.'
He first lived in Maryland, then moved to Chillicothe, Ohio. He married
in Chillicothe. Details from vanity pub for William Colbert Hatfield c
turn of century.
Fought in the War of 1812.
He is listed in the Ohio 1820 census and 1830 Census Deerfield Twp. Ross
Co.
A grave stone bearing his name and the name Martha L. with b. and d.
dates is in the Old Baptist Cemetery east of Clarksburg on Stingy Lane,
1/2 mile south of the Pickaway Co. Line. "Hatfield--John D., b. Sept.
18, 1780, d. Apr. 15, 1845. Martha L. b. Aug. 20, 1807, d. July 4,
1890."
WILL verifying b. date with middle initial and list of children by his
second wife as benificiaries written March 30, 1845, two weeks before
death.
Found marriage record of a John Hatfield in MD to Mary Hans 2/5/1804.
Could he have married in MD rather than OH? Ceremony wittnessed by
brother and others. Then who is Martha L.? No one mentions her and she
lived to 87!
Having found no OH records, I went to MD and found the only John Hatfield
in the state was married in 1804 to Mary Harris. Suspect the Mary Hans
cited above is Mary Harris. . He could have gone back to MD for her
thereby making the vanity bio for W. C. Hatfield correct. viz.: He
contracted to marry his first wife after arriving in Chillicothe.
10/16/96 Jerry Hatfield, another searcher, says the Mary Harris/Hans is
not my John, but his.
Death certificate of Nelson Hatfield shows his father as John Hatfield,
born MD and mother Maria Baker, born MD. C.D. Biner provided D.C. info
which is suspect regarding birthplace of John. So Maria is John's second
wife. That means than Martha L. was way too young to be his first wife.
She could have been a daughter of that union. Marriage records show her
name as Mariah.
