From the Desk of Al Hatfield
My name is Alvin S. Hatfield Jr. I was born September 26, 1947 in
Williamson WV. My Grandparents, John E and Maggie (Scott) Hatfield lived
in Sprigg, WV. My grandparents, my parents (Alvin S, Sr. and Donna Sue
(Shortridge), and two brothers are buried in the Anderson Hatfield
Memorial Cemetery in McCarr, KY. My mother was working on our family
tree in the years prior to her passing (1986) and I am trying to locate
those papers now. I am the oldest of seven children; the other sisters
and brothers are: Mary M., Ronald G. (killed in a car wreck in WV in
1988 and buried beside his father), Elinda D./David O. (twins- David
passed away shortly after birth and is buried beside his mother); Robert
S. (currently living in Virginia Beach, VA - named after Stearl Hatfield
- who is in one of the commonly displayed photographs about the Hatfield
Family) and Roger L. (also residing in Virginia Beach). We left the
mining camp of Surosa in 1958 - I was attending Matewan Jr./Sr High
School at the time. My Aunt Magaline Hatfield still, to the best of my
knowledge, resides in McCarr in the house just below the Anderson
Hatfield Memorial Cemetery. I am not quite sure where my family fits
into the grand scheme of the Hatfield Family Tree, but am interested in
finding out so my family here can maintain some sense of identity with
their American Heritage while I finish up my civil service career. I am
a retired U.S. Army Korean/Chinese Mandrin linguist, I have worked with
the military/civil service since 1964. If you have any tips on how to
begin, please respond. Thanks very much, Al Hatfield
