Hello Jerry~ Some time ago I wondered whether you wanted new information,
but then never got around to sending it. My guilt has got the better of
me, so here it is.
In your "miscellaneous" file appears Benjamin Thornberry/Thornborough
Hatfield, my ggggrandfather, who md. Mary Rawlings. I still don't know
anything about his parents, origins, siblings, but can tell you about his
son James J(ackson) Hatfield and descendants. Other information about
James' siblings will have to wait a bit.
James md. Ruth Eveline Greenwood, the dau. of Edmund Greenwood of
Cabell Co., Va., and Jeanettee Foster, of Clark co., Ky. Ruth was born in
Sangamon co., Ill., April 5, 1838. She died in Kansas City, Jackson co.,
Mo., on January 9, 1933. (These people lived generally into their 90s).
She md. March 26, 1857 in Adair co., Mo. to James Jackson Hatfield.
(sources-censuses, city directories, death certificates). Both James and
Ruth died at their residence, 3725 Garner St., Kansas City, Mo., and are
buried in Mt. Washington Cemetery, K.C., with their son Edmond Lee and
his family.
James Jackson Hatfield was born Feb. 1, 1834 in Indiana (censuses).
He died Sept. 10, 1925 as above. He and Ruth had four children: 1)Edmund
Lee Hatfield, b. Oct. 22, 1858/9, Adair co., Mo.; 2) Jeanettee, b. ca
1860 (census) Adair co., Mo., md. 1-Mr. Triplet and 2-Dr.G. Wm. Howell;
3) James D., b. ca March, 1871, Adair or Chariton co., Mo.; and 4)Arthur
Wayne, b. Oct. 22, 1879, Chariton co., Mo.
Edmund Lee is my great-grandfather, so I'll come back to him. His
sister, "Aunt Nettie", was named for their grandmother, Jeanette Foster,
whose father, Peyton Foster, was in the Revolution. I have not had much
luck learning too much about "Nettie", as she had no children. She did
join the D.A.R. within the first ten years of its existence, so I found
her death there as recorded as Nov. 28, 1928. She belonged to the
Springfield, Mo., chapter, and likely died thereabouts. Incredibly, I
cannot get a death certificate on her, but have tried several times. They
cannot manage the right woman. My great-aunt did remember her as living
in Springfield, having md. a guy named "Triplet" first, then md. "Uncle
Bill" Howell; then dying of a degenerative nerve disease. No children.
She did live in Springfield in 1925.
James D. Hatfield, son of James J., was born March, 1871 in Adair
co., Mo. He md. there March 28, 1897 Ercelia E. Sanders. (census et al)
Ercelia was born in July of 1877 in Mo. They had dau. Dora L., b. Jan.,
1898, and Mamie I., born Sept., 1899, in Adair co. (census). In 1900 they
lived in Ninevah twp. there. In 1925 and 1933 in his parents' obituaries
they were living in Dallas, Texas. I have not followed them
Arthur Wayne Hatfield, son of James J. and Ruth-was born Oct. 22,
1879 in Chariton co.?(census) He md. May 25, 1901 J. Nellie Briggs. She
md. 2ndly a Mr. Brown and died in Washington state, Chehalis, in 1944.
Arthur died in Kansas City June 11, 1965 at his daughter Marie's home. He
was buried June 14, 1965 at Forest Hill Cemetery, Kansas City (according
to his death certificate info. given by Marie) and family records. Arthur
and Nellie had: 1)Marie 2)Olive and 3) James Theodore. Of 2)Olive I know
only family hearsay, that she died in Chehalis, Washington in 1965. Of
3)James Theodore: born June 3, 1904, Mo.; md. Imogene Farmer in Kansas
City Dec. 21, 1939; he died in K.C. Nov. 23, 1970. No issue. Supposedly
he and his father died of heart failure. Supposedly their mother Nellie
wanted to move to Washington ca 1910, and so the family did. The story
according to Marie is that Wayne returned to K.C. without the family, but
later returned for his son and kidnapped him, taking him back home. Marie
found him there years later and was reunited with him and her father.
Marie was born June 9, 1902 in Mo. She md. first Dec. 26, 1927
Simeon Eugene "Gene" Corbin, no children. She md. second Mervin Miller
(Mueller) Jan 1, 1940. Mervin died July 18, 1952 when their daughter
Marilyn was 12. Marilyn was born when Mervin was 72 years old. His
parents were German immigrants; he was raised in Shelbina, Mo., due west
of Hannibal. (according to Marilyn). Marie died Oct. 15, 1976.
Marilyn Miller was born Sept. 23, 1940 in Kansas City, Mo. She md.
James William Rutherford June 7, 1958 in Kansas City. He was born July
31, 1933 in Duran Co., Colo. He died June 23, 1986 in Scott Air Force
Base, Ill., is buried at Ignacio, Colo. Marilyn and Bill had four
children: David Craig Rutherford, b. June 17, 1960; Gerald Scott, born
Sept. 7, 1962 (both b. Marquette, Michigan); Stephen James, b. Nov. 6,
1967, Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Julia Marie, b. Jan. 23, 1970. I have met
these folks, so this is first-hand knowledge. Julia has md., but I don't
have her name.
