Eve Ellen Hatfield, daughter of Rafe (Doc) Norvell Hatfield, wrote a
letter to her father on September 12, 1933. I have the original letter
which was given to me by Minnie Hatfield Stevens who was the youngest
daughter of Rafe Hatfield. The letter reads as follows
September the 12, 1933 Pryor Okla Star Rout
Dear father and mother, i (I) will anser(answer) your letter we got the
other day. Sure was glad to hear from you all and to and to hear that you
was well. Well this leaves us both well as _______. i (I) have still got
the rumatisom (reumitisim in my leg well flossie went home with retta and
stay 2 weeks tomorrow tha was all well when i got a letter from them
tha(they) was all hear Sunday and z (Elzie) and mattie tha (they) was
all well. Well paw and maw i sure would like to see you all but i cant
get no money to get any one to come to get you. If i (I) could - sure
would. But i(I) must sell 40 sents (cents) worth of cream a week and i(I)
am not gettin (getting) but 1 egg every 2 or 3 days. The chickens is
still a lyen (layen). i (I) am not a goin (going) to set no hens. i (I)
have tride (tried) 2 years and i (I) have not got as many as i (I) had to
start with. Well it sure is lonsom (lonesome) for me. i (I) sure wish
you and paw was hear (here) to be with me. i (I) am by myself sometimes.
i (I) have washed today but i (I) didnt have much to wash. Well paw i (I)
never have seen ant (aunt) Bet but when i (I) do i (I) will tell her that
she owes you a new pair of overalls. Well it sure is offel (awful) hard
times hear (here) but i (I) do wish you all was hear (here) if you all
will watch tha (their) mite (might) be some Cherikee (Cherokee) come from
in about Stilwell to the _____________ if hear it is to be on Salien
(Sling) Creek whare (where) we did live. You mite (might) get to come
with some of them. It is a big meeten (meeting) tha (they) will come from
ever where. Well if you can be sure and come. Well maw i (I) have ben
(been) sewen (sewing) some on my cuilt (quilt) peces (pieces) i (I) get
so lonsom (lonesome). My tomatoes is not mutch (much) good i (I) have
cand (canned) 3 cuarts (quarts) but i (I) think i (I) will get to can
some more. Paw if you can come i (I) will make you some peanut butter
this fall when the peanuts gett ripe, ha ha. i (I) think we will have a
lot of them. i (I) have got about all of my cans full now. i (I) dont no
(know) how many i (I) have got but it is over 350. Well our cotton is
not mutch (much) good. It is a open (opening) some i (I) dont no (know)
when we will go to picken (picking) it. O (oh) yes i (I) have got me a
pig now. Teds old sow borned 12 but 4 of them died. i (I) got one of
them it sure is a fine hog to. i (I) think so, ha ha. Well maw Frankie
said ant (aunt) Bell Adams was so she could be up now. She is better.
Well it is cloudy and looks like rain hear (here). Well sure wished for
you all last night to help me and glory eat watter (water) melon. Well i
(I) cant think of no more to rit (write). Maw i (I) will send you a stamp
