After the surrender of Cornwallis at the siege of Yorktown, Virginia,
John Hites Sr. was marched to Baltimore, Maryland where he served as an
express carrier. It was here in Maryland that he married Catherine
Brouwer. And Michael was born in 1787.
Michael married Peggy Hatfield from Maryland in 1910 [sic s/b 1810]. The
two were living in Island Creek Township in Jefferson County, Ohio by
1820 after traveling through Pennsylvania and what is now the northern
panhandle of West Virginia. They proceeded with his father to Holmes
County where John had received a 700 acre land grant for his service in
the American Revolution.
They had 7 children together during their travels until Peggy died in
1826. Michael remarried in 1830 in Holmes County to Margaret Pyers with
whom he had four children.
By 1850, Michael and Margaret had moved to Hardin County where his
brother John Jr had improved several hundred acres of farm land with the
John Hatfield Clan who had been traveling together since the early days
in Maryland. After Margaret's death in 1860, Michael moved in with the
family of James Harvey. Then, by 1870 at the age of 82, he was living
with his nephew George Hites where he likely resided until his death six
years later.
