All of the Ferrells in this area are descendants of Richard Ferrell.
Richard was deeded all of the property of Logan, Mingo, Wyoming, Wayne,
Cabell which was a part of western Virginia. He received these deeds from
the King of England as land grants prior to West Virginia seceding from
the Commonwealth of Virginia. Richard Ferrell referred to as Old Dickie
Ferrell is believed to have had 2 families. One he left over in Virginia
prior to settling with a second family in the Logan Tug Valley area. You
can see copies of the land grants recorded in state Capitol building in
Charleston. I have genealogy reports of Ferrell family going all the way
back to Richard and would be happy to check any particular segments that
any of you would want.
Tim Dean: Mr. Walters is correct about deeds dating to the Colonial era.
I have seen a couple that are not in the State Archives. Folks in Matewan
are misguided with all the historical focus in one place. The town of
Matewan was an invention by the companies with financial interest
there. The Ferrell family sold it. The old graveyard holds the tombs of
the original Virginia settlers.
