THERE ARE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIS ARTICLE AND THE
ONE WHICH FOLLOWS.
Perry A. Cline, a noted character in West
Virginia and Eastern Kentucky, was born on a farm
at the mouth of this stream [Peter's Creek], in 1845, and at one time
was the owner ot the home property, which he traded
for a farm on the west side of the Tug River, in Ken-
tucky. He had the advantages of only about three
months of schooling, but was blessed with good com-
mon sense, and through reading, observation and the
use of his inherent qualities never allowed his early
educational disadvantages to handicap him. He was
elected sheriff of Pike County for two terms and
served capably in that offce from 1876 to 1880, was
school commissioner two terms and a member of the
State Legislature in 1886 and 1887. He then studied
law and was admitted to the bar, but his career was
cut short in 1891, when he was only forty-three years
of age. His widow, a native of Pike County, survived
him until March 2, 1920, and was seventy-three years
of age at the time of her demise. In politics, Perry
A. Cline was a Union democrat. While he was too
young for service at the outbreak of the war between
the states, he was an ardent Union sympathizer, and
his brother served in the Federal Army. Mr. and
Mrs. Cline were the parents of eight children : John S. ;
A. D., a minister of the Methodist Church in Pike
County: Roxana, the wife of P. F. Preston, of Leb-
anon. Ohio; Myra, who died at the age of thirty years
at Pikeville, as the wife of Watt Curnutte ; Ella, the
wife of William A. Richards, of Columbus, Ohio ;
W. O. B., a farmer at Oak Hill, Ohio; Jacob P., an
engineer on the C. & O. Railroad; and Maude, the
wife of W. L. York, of Pikeville.

------
from a news article detailing Perry A. Cline's life was printed in a
Frankfort, Ky., newspaper on March 11, 1886.
"The story of the life of Hon. Perry A. Cline, representative from the
counties of Pike, Letcher, Knott and Martin, reads like a romance. He was
born Jan. 3, 1849, in Logan County, W.Va., of parents who came from
Virginia. His mother died when he was two-years-old and his father five
years later. In his childhood he was left in the care of three
African-Americans (who had worked for the family). (There were very few
schools in the area where they lived so it was decided that he would come
to Pikeville and his caregiver would come with him.) After the late war
he engaged in rafting logs from which he realized $150. There being no
schools where he lived he started on foot for Russell County, Va., a
distance of over 100 miles, suffering many privations and hardships on
the way. He remained in school eight and a half months, when his money
was exhausted and he returned to Pike County. From 1874 to 1878 he was
sheriff of Pike County. In 1885 he was nominated for Representative from
his district and elected as Democrat over two opponents, one a
Republican, the other an Independent. Mr. Cline is in every sense of the
word a self-educated, self-made man. No human being ever lent him a
helping hand that his own efforts did not merit. He has studied hard,
been conscientious in all his undertakings, been honorable and faithful
in his friendships, and deserves all he has attained of success or
worldly goods. He was admitted to the bar in 1884, since which time he
has practiced his profession. He is a member of the Legislative
Committees on Circuit Courts and Education, on both of which he is doing
good service."
When he was a representative in Frankfort, Cline pushed through the bill
to educate African-Americans. The Perry A. Cline School in Pikeville was
named for him.
