Tolbert M. Hatfield, son of Thompson, who was killed in the 1902 gun
battle, was our neighbor when I grew up. He had a second wife, named
Easter, but I have forgotten her maiden name. She survived him and was
found shot three times in the living room in front of an open safe a few
months after T.M (that's what everyone called Tolbert) died. T.M.'s
oldest son, Claude, had a disablind stroke when he was about 40-42 years
old, leaving him paralyzed on one side. His wife, Melvina, whom he
married several years after his stroke, was the widow of Kenner Hatfield,
who owned a store just below the mouth of Preacher branch, where the old
Preacher Anse house was. Kenner died in the late 1950's and Claude
married Melvina a couple of years later.
