Thanks, Carol, for answering my query both here and on another message
board. Now that I know that there were two William Hatfields, father and
grandfather of Owen Hatfield Sr, it makes more sense.
Here is my line from Jonathan Kelsey and Sarah Hatfield:
1. Sarah Hatfield (b 1810) and Jonathan Kelsey (b 1808) were married in
1829. Children (Kelsey) Elizabeth b 1830, Abner b 1833, Samantha b 1834,
Ruth b 1836, Ann Lany b 1838, Lydia b 1840, Levi b 1842, Elmira b 1844,
and Aden b 1848.
2. Ann Lany Kelsey (b 1838) married Abraham (or Abram) Gaskill (b 1836)
on Oct 14, 1858 (the same day as her sister Ruth; ceremonies performed by
Owen Hatfield, JP, probably their uncle). Children (Gaskill) Ida, Ethel,
William b 1873, Olive (Ollie), Laura b 1883.
3. William Gaskill (b 1873) married Altha VanWormer (b 1879) on Nov 14,
1896. Children (Gaskill) Edna b 1897, Eva Leota b 1899, Lloyd b 1901,
Lucille b 1906, William Raymond b 1908, Mildred b 1910, Robert b 1917.
4. Robert Gaskill (b 1917) married B Faye Speicher (b 1920) on Dec 26,
1941. Children (Gaskill) Susan b 1948, Diana b 1953.
5. Susan Gaskill (b 1948) married Robert Hammond (b 1948) on Aug 11,
1968. Child (Hammond) Natalie b 1969.

Hi, glad to hear from you. I have been diligently trying to sort out why
no one can connect the Delaware Hatfield's to the Thomas Mathias lines or
to separate the various Thomas Hatfield lines of Delaware and Ohio from
one another.
Recently (about 8 months ago-- a short time in genealogy) I discovered
the fact that a William Hatfield arrived in the James and Elizabeth City
areas of Virginia in 1622 on the ship Southampton. No point of origin is
listed, but he is shown as a servant for William Ferrar and Cicily Jordon
at Jordan's Jorney. According to my research this Ferrar owned one of
the larger plantations of the London Company. Muster rolls for Jordan's
Jorney (correct spelling according to record) william is present in the
1624 roll. Also present in that time period at Elizabeth City is one
Joseph Hatfield not of the Mathias lines either as he arrived on the Bona
Nova.
Apparently William was an indentured servant which would have meant that
he served 5 to 7 years before being able to claim head rights in about
1627 to 1629. Ferrar seems to have been a generous employer from records
of dealings with other men in his employment. Indentured men could if
they had t he means acquire land while still indentured and many of these
men were skilled laborers who came to Virginia simply because there was
no work in England during the upheavals at that time there. During the
period of indenture a servant could not marry.
REcords of the Nansecomb area of Virginia show that William was granted
about 400 acres by 1638 when he himself transported 8 individuals. Two
of these were Elizabeth Edes and one other woman and the rest were men.
It appears that he may have married Elizabeth (women could marry if the
person who transported them allowed them to). It appearst that by 1640
William had moved a little to the North West of Elizabeth City up the
James River. He remained there for many years and had a family that
included one John Hatfield born about 1645 and a daughter Elizabeth.
A Yeoman was a farmer who owned 200 or more acres and William was one of
those. Between 1665 and 1676 a man named Burgess I think was the
political leader. The people of the area had lived in peace with certain
tribes of Indian while have severe problems with others. Burgess and his
followers began to kill off the friendly Indians and deal unfairly with
the smaller farmers of the area of which William and John were a part.
Many of the farmers became followers of Nathaniel Bacon and rebelled
against the "powers that were" so to speak. This made them very
unpopular and placed them in danger.
In 1675 court documents show that John Hatfield transported himself to
Maryland. If one looks at the various maps of the times the Nansecomb
area of Virginia is just across the bay from Maryland. John settled
there and the next year 1676 William transported himself and wife
Elizabeth, daughter Elizabeth and "two others" to the same area. The
interesting facts are: He would have had a goodly sum of money from the
sale of his Virginia property, and Maryland's headright system was
different from Virginia. In Virginia a man received 50 acres for each
person he imported meaning William would have had about 700 acres, but in
Maryland taking with him his profits he would have been awarded 500 acres
to begin with plus the 100 that JOhn would have had.
William Hatfield died in 1678 as shown by will probate. John Hatfield
would have been about 30 years old at that time. No marriage has been
found for him at this time, but court procedings show that he was in
business with Arthur Whitely in tobacco dealings. Arthur was a well
established merchant by that time having married Mary Worgan the daughter
of William who was a merchant and inn keeper. John had a son John who
was born after 1676 probably about 1680-1685. This John married Adling
Mary Whitely beginning the lines which lead to William John Hatfield who
was born 1702 in Dorchester Maryland. John, husband of Adling Mary died
in 1725 in Dorchester Maryland. Court procedings show that Adling Mary
remarried quickly to William Cannon and they processed John Hatfield's
will in 1727.
William John Hatfield born 1702 married Mary White who was the daughter
of William White and a sister to Richard White.
This couple were the parents of William Hatfield who was born in 1733 in
Dorchester Maryland. They were also the parents of Elizabeth 1725, Levi
1727, Wm 1733, Whitely 1741 daus Sary and Mary, and appear to have been
the parents of at least one Thomas and a John.
In 1742-1748 William John Hatfield, Richard and William White, Peter
Lowber, Thomas Davis, and an Allen acquired adjoining lands in
Murderkill 100 Kent Co Delaware. These lands ranged along a road called
Whitely's road which was a "farm to market" road running from Kent County
to Maryland. This explains the repeated connects between the Hatfields,
Whites, and Davis' in marriages and in court records.
John and Thomas Hatfield would have been about 40 at the time of the
Revolutionary War. Both were killed in 1781 at the Battles of Cowpens and
Greenbriar. John shows next of Kin as John Hatfield and monies were
transferred to him after his father's death. John is shown in military
records as being 5'6 and of ruddy complexion. John was the father of
James who married Piercy Hudson and Hannah sometimes shown as Anne who
married Thomas Davis. William and Owen John Hatfield sons of William
1733 and Mary White Hatfield(this Mary White was 20 years younger than
her husband and was the dau of Richard and Elizabeth Paramore White) are
shown as going surety for Hannah in Montgomery Co OH in 1804 after Thomas
Davis' death. They would have been her first cousins I think. Can't do
the math in my head.
Of course from this point on it is easier to track the Delaware
Hatfields. William Jr b after 1770, Owen John 1773, Whitely, Jonathon,
and Levin Hatfield removed to Ohio by about 1801 when letters are shown
for William at the Post Office at Sugar Creek.Levin married SArah Davis
the daughter of his cousin Hannah and Thomas Davis, Owen married Ann Lana
McBride, Nathaniel married a Tshudi, Whitely md Nancy Allen, I think
Jonathon married a Dyer would have to check. Nathaniel is shown in the
Monongehela Valley of VA in 1787 as son in law of Martin Tshudi.
Owen and Ann Lana were the parents of Levi 1795 who is the direct
antecedent of Owen D who was my fathers grt grd ftr.
Let me know what you think about this research. Carol
